Guidelines for label reading of packaged foods

• Total fat
High: more than 17.5g of fat per 100g
Low: 3gms. Or less per 100gms.
• Saturated fat
High: more than 5gms. Of saturated fat per 100gms.
Low: 1.5gms. or less per 100gms
• Sugar
High:22.5gms. of total sugar per 100gms
Low: 5gms or less per 100gms.
• Salt
High: more than 1.5gms of salt per 100gms(or 0.6gms sodium)
Low: 0.3 gms or less of salt per 100gms.(or 0.1gms of sodium)
 
The ingredients mention on the packaged foods that you have to be careful are the following
 
• Brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, carob powder, honey, corn syrup/ solids, invert sugar, lactose , dextrin , fructose mannose , molasses and glucose indicates a high sugar content
• Any animal fat, high fat products such as whole milk and cheese and lard indicates high cholesterol
• Baking soda, salt, baking powder and monosodium glutamate(MSG) indicates high sodium content
• Any animal products( except fish), palm and coconut oil, coconut butter and partially hydrogenated fats indicates a high in saturated and trans fats.
